ARTS SOCIETY – KENNET & SWINDON :: WONDERS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE – OFF LIMITS

ARTS SOCIETY – KENNET & SWINDON
January lecture: WONDERS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE – OFF LIMITS
by Sam Moorhead
The January meeting of the Society will take place promptly at 10.55 on Monday, 15 January
at the Ellendune Centre, Wroughton.
Coffee (and mince pies) will be served from 10 00.
THE LECTURE: Recent turmoil in the Near East & North Africa means that many significant Roman sites can no longer be visited
and, indeed, have been damaged. Sam had the good fortune to have recently worked and travelled in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Through an exploration of architecture, mosaics and sculpture Sam will highlight the richness of eastern Mediterranean culture,
one which has been so brutally damaged or destroyed in the last few years.
THE LECTURER: Sam Moorhead joined the staff of the British Museum in 1997 as staff lecturer for Archaeology.
He has excavated widely in both the Mediterranean and Great Britain concentrating on Roman and early mediaeval periods.
He is the National Finds Adviser for Iron Age and Roman coins.
He is a long standing member of a variety of councils and is currently chairman of the Palestine Exploration Fund.
Sam Moorhead is now a widely published author mainly relating to the Roman Empire and its coinage.
