Since 1999 Folk Roots gigs have been popular (and frequently sold-out) fixtures in the Marlborough Music calendar of every year. Many of the great folk artists and acts have played for Folk Roots in the town, some of the really big national and international acts, many times. While & Matthews – Chris While and Julie Matthews – fit that description perfectly and they will be kicking off the 25th Anniversary Season for Folk Roots in Marlborough on 16 October in the Town Hall.
For them it’s another anniversary, their 30th anniversary UK tour and they will be playing music from their latest – and 13th – studio album. Regulars to Marlborough and Folk Roots they were here last three years ago in ’21 with a sell-out concert and Folk Roots now welcome them back. The Guardian describes them, “The undisputed queens of British folk duos continue to come up with the goods. First class songs delivered with to die for harmonies, immaculate musicianship and melodies that lodge themselves in your brain”.
While & Matthews will be taking over the Town Hall, but Folk Roots has used many different venues in the town to stage their presentations. Steve Tilston, another Folk Roots favourite will be at Minal Village Hall on Friday 22 November but before then it’s another ‘great’ – Martin Carthy at the Town Hall for ‘A Special Evening of Song & Conversation‘ with Jon Wilks. And then While & Matthews again, but this time with the Fairport Convention legend Chris Leslie, all together as ‘St Agnes Fountain‘ for the regular annual pre-Christmas concert in Marlborough on Tuesday 17 December.
More to come after Christmas for the twenty fifth anniversary season of Marlborough Folk Roots.
