Next week is Challenge Poverty Week and Richard Oliver from Devizes and District Foodbank has organised an information evening in the Town Hall on Thursday October 3 at 7pm. The event is supported by Marlborough Area Poverty Action Group and brings together Danny Kruger MP, Jane Davies (Wiltshire Councillor for Marlborough West), and Suzanne Wigmore(CEO of Wiltshire Citizens Advice). Marlborough’s Mayor, Cllr Kym-Marie Cleasby, whose initiative Love Marlborough Kids Meals supports so many families in our area, will also be in attendance.
Richard Oliver told Marlborough.news, “Since 2013, Challenge Poverty Week marks an annual series of events in the Christian calendar, co-ordinated by Church Action on Poverty. Challenge Poverty Week provides a focus for us all to review and act on poverty facts, whether internationally, nationally or locally – formally to celebrate what is already happening to challenge poverty and to challenge our political leaders to act on poverty. The Devizes & District Foodbank seeks to bring together community political leaders, charities, friends and citizens who are constructively interested in making our area a better place to live for its poorest and most vulnerable members.
Wiltshire is administratively divided into 285 sub-units known as LSOAS (Lower Super Output Areas) and, of these, 8 rank within the 20% nationally most deprived.”
Vincent Stokes is the foodbank co-ordinator for Marlborough which covers postcodes SN8 and 9. Foodbank donations from Tesco and Waitrose in Marlborough are taken to the foodbank hub in Devizes for boxing and processing. Each week people are referred by various agencies to receive an emergency foodbank delivery. Vincent co-ordinates the delivery of these emergency foodbank boxes in Marlborough and he is looking for a deputy.
“I am looking for a deputy co-ordinator who would be willing to work alongside me and learn how the system works and take over when I am away. The time commitment per week would be no more than 2 hours.”
If you feel you could be that person then please contact Vincent on vincentstokes52@gmail.com.
