Honiton lace is one of Britain’s finest handmade laces, with a history stretching back as far as the 17th century. For upwards of three centuries the lace has been made by men and women in the East Devon villages surrounding Honiton. This lecture is an exploration of the history of a dying craft industry. The lecture will include a practical demonstration.
Kate Strasdin is a senior lecturer at Falmouth University. She is also Deputy Curator at the Totnes Fashion and Textile Museum and has worked with textiles and dress for some twenty years. She is a practising lace maker and claims to be one of the youngest practitioners of the art of Honiton lacemaking.
