In one of Marlborough’s old, original and historic retail sites on the High Street is the Helen & Douglas House charity shop. In the space previously occupied by Susie Watson Designs and long before that the magical presence of Duck’s Toy Shop (magical – for any and probably every kid who walked past or managed to persuade Mum or Dad to venture in). Now a new accolade to add to the heritage of 114 High Street, this Helen & Douglas House shop has just been awarded the ‘WOW award, Best Shop Interior’ at the UK Retail Charity Conference in Harrogate. ‘WOW’ – a statement of wonder and respect, not just any acronym.

Many of the properties on the High Street are old and original. Merchant’s House being the obvious example but no. 114 also boasts a long history. Apparently even a theatrical venue back in the 16th century, where (possibly) the Bard’s works were performed, and original features such as the fireplace and exposed beams still abound. But now, somewhere that has been recognised for what it is in the contemporary era – a welcoming ambiance for visitors and shoppers creating a quite unique, boutique style shopping experience.
The Marlborough Helen & Douglas House shop is one of twenty five around this area, looking to serve the needs of local families, helping them cope with the challenges of looking after a terminally ill baby or child who will die prematurely. A hospice is filled with laughter, whilst also being peaceful place where families can create happy memories in their last days, weeks, months or years together.
Katie Stuart-Cox Director of Retail and Trading at Helen & Douglas House said: “When we opened our new shop in Marlborough on 8th August 2024 nearly a year ago, we wanted to embrace the community heritage in our new store design.
“Our design process involved a deep dive into local heritage, allowing us to pay tribute to the past while seamlessly integrating modern elements that appeal to today’s shoppers.
“This combination of traditional and contemporary design aims to create an inviting atmosphere that reflects the unique identity of the community. By celebrating local roots, we aspire to create a shopping experience that resonates with residents and connects them to the communities we proudly serve.
Jodie Berry, Marlborough shop manager said “We are delighted to win this national WOW award, for our Marlborough shop design and this award reflects all the wonderful comments our shoppers have made about our lovely shop.
“Many customers say I didn’t realise this was a charity shop because it is so well laid out. Others have said it feels like shopping in a boutique and it’s my favourite shop because it is so nice and unique.
