u3a in Kennet, popular, but getting ever more so. On Wednesday next week, between 10am and 1pm they are holding their annual ‘Open Day’ at the Town Hall, where anyone interested can pop in and see what u3a is, what it could offer and if they are interested in joining.
Contrary to the name, it’s not a ‘university’ nor educational organisation. But members can learn, what they want, see what interests them and if they want to, join up with others who have the same interests. It’s a UK-wide movement of locally-run interest groups that provide a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun. That’s how it’s described on the u3a website and if asked, that’s also how most members would describe the organisation.
The ‘3a’ refers to the ‘Third Age’, what was once called ‘old age’ but is now recognised as an age of activity where retired, or people no longer in full-time work can come together and share learning, activity and experiences.
u3a in Kennet is the local group. Centred on Marlborough the overall group numbers more than seven hundred. Not all coming together at once, too many to all fit in the Court Room – or even upstairs Assembly Room – of the Town Hall, definitely, but all getting involved and contributing in their own way to one (or more) of the many different interest/activity groups that make up this local area group. at present the number of activity / interest groups exceeds sixty, covering a wide range of areas from art to wine, to walking.
Jill Turner, chair of the u3a in Kennet group says – ‘pop in to Marlborough Town Hall in for a free cup of tea or coffee on Wednesday morning next week to see what u3a can offer you’.
