u3s in Kennet, to give the group its full title offer a very wide range of activities and interests to members in and around the Marlborough area. For many it becomes a key part of their social group. The group boasts ’65 interest groups’ as well as regular meetings, ‘Coffee Exchanges’, Kennet Talks, discussion groups and much more.
It’s become a very popular group in the Marlborough area, aiming to offer those who have finished their full time work something different, interesting and new. So popular that Jeff Hide, Vice Chair and Events Co-ordinator, in his introductory speech stated that already, before yesterday at a rough estimate the number of members of the u3a in Kennet group represented more than one quarter of the total retired population of this area. So u3a is popular, and after yesterday, becoming ever more so.
When asked what the most important thing anyone joining the group will discover, Chair Jill Turner answered: “New members will find that the organisation offers friendship and fun along with opportunities to learn and find out about a wide range of topics and activities.” She added that “former national u3a Chairman Len Street, OBE said that u3a prolongs active life.” Len (now 96) was awarded his OBE for services to Adult Education and the u3a in recognition of its value and importance.
