If there are to be elections, in one or both wards, it is for you – the electors in the Marlborough Town Council area to decide.
Vacancies have arisen in both of Marlborough’s two Council wards – East and West – due to last year’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Don Heath standing down as he’s relocated, and the other vacancy being caused by the ‘non attendance’ of former Mayor, Cllr Guy Loosmore.
What happens next? Either an election – one one or both wards will be called, or a process of ‘co-option’ will take place, where prospective Councillors apply, with nominations, and the current Councillors then interview each candidate and then decide who to appoint (by secret ballot). This is not a ‘closed’ process, members of the public are free to attend, as they are to other council committee meetings.
An election will be called, in one or both wards, if the electors in each of those wards want an election in their ward. Ten electors need to contact the Returning Officer at Wiltshire Council – Terence Herbert – by 16 June at the following address:
Terence Herbert, Returning Officer, Wiltshire Council, County Hall, Care Of The Electoral Services Team, Bythesea Road, Trowbridge, Wiltshire BA14 8JN – having completed the ‘form to request an election’ which can be access by clicking here.
Below are the notices of the election for each of the two wards:
