Representatives from three charitable organisations have met staff and students at St John’s Marlborough to receive donations raised from the school’s sponsored walk in July.
Cancer Research UK, the Futuresense Foundation and Swift Medics each received cheques for £1,495 from St John’s Principal, Nicky Edmondson.
The sponsored walk involved all students in Years 7-10. They walked a 9 mile route from St John’s to Savernake Forest in their tutor groups, accompanied by their tutors and other teaching staff.
The walk was organised by Assistant Vice Principal, Tom Nicholls as part of the Academy’s ‘Living without Luxury’ week. Each walking group had the additional challenge of carrying two large and full water containers around the route.
Claire Wilson from Cancer Research UK, Prakriti Malhotra from the Newbury-based Futuresense Foundation, and Doctors Jonathan Glover, Dan Bawden and Andrew Heavyside from Wiltshire charity Swift Medics chatted to a group of staff and students about how their donations would be used.
The Futuresense Foundation is a locally-based charity that promotes community development through a range of programmes that provide financial support and manpower for volunteer projects overseas.
Swift Medics are volunteer doctors who provide out of hospital emergency medical care in Wiltshire at the scene of serious accidents or for sudden severe medical conditions such as cardiac arrest, severe asthma or meningitis. The doctors are all unpaid volunteers and are on call to provide full critical care at the scene.
The charity fundraises to pay for training and equipment, and the funds raised by St John’s students will purchase a Lucas 2 chest compression system.
St John’s students are regularly involved in fundraising activities at the academy including bake sales, non-uniform days and performance events. Teaching staff aim to ensure that students always have a clear understanding of the work done by the charities and why it is so important to support them.
