This afternoon, Friday 27 October Devizes MP Danny Kruger visited The Merchants House to be given a tour all the way round the old celebrated building and have a look at the shop and Christmas offerings now on sale.
The Merchant’s House is Marlborough’s most famous iconic building, dating back to the mid-seventeenth century, rebuilt in the immediate period following the Great Fire of Marlborough and gradually being restored to its former glory of bygone years.
And for Danny, with his two children, a chance to do a bit of Christmas shopping. Socks for Rishi? Maybe, there were plenty to choose from.
The tour took in all of the main feature areas of the house, all the way up to the second floor with Silk Merchant’s Thomas Bayly’s office. On the first floor the dining room, bedrooms and panelled room overlooking the High Street, where the Christmas Room display sits
A tour around The Merchant’s House is a walk-in to Marlborough history. The Trust has run the house for the past thirty two years, since 1991 when WH Smiths sold the building to the Town Council from where the Trust lease the house at a peppercorn rent but are responsible for all the upkeep, and particularly the restoration work which has been a major project since 1991. Income from the shop helps as do grants, donations and many other fund-raising ventures.
