Not to be outdone by our local primary schools, St John’s organised a whole week of activities to celebrate World Book Day. Organised by Anne Stokes, Library Manager, whole school activities included a 6-word novel competition, a hidden books competition to guess the book title from the image and daily book quizzes.
KS3 history classes were all set an Unknown Portraits writing activity based on the period of history they are studying: Year 7 Middle Ages, Year 8 Tudors, Year 9 World Wars. On Thursday small groups of students joined in with a Living Books activity in the library. On Friday Year 7 and 8 students recited favourite poems in assembly. Year 9 organised a book swap, with any left- over books being donated to Oxfam. And there was the yearly competition to decorate classroom doors as book titles, with prizes for the winning entries.
Anne Stokes, Library manager, said, “Our Living Books have a wonderful, enlightening and powerful impact on both the students and the staff member. They both learn a lot about each other.”
Alan Henderson, Principal, commented, “World Book Day is one of the standout events in St John’s academic year and I personally love to see the creative efforts of staff and students for the door competition. As soon as ‘The Angelic Headmaster’ is written I promise to swap out my door decorations! Many thanks to the staff who participated in the Living Books project.”
