Last Sunday June 26, The Ramsbury Tennis Club annual summer tournament finals day got off to a fine start with sunny skies. However, a very gusty day saw more than just the players on the courts at times!
The men’s singles contest was fought between Matt Fretwell and Edward Taylor, both players with a good slice backhand and eager to get to the net. They kept the crowds happy with Matt taking the title 6-0,6-2.
A similar victory was won by Melissa Brown in the ladies’ singles (6-0,6-1) against Clare Allman.
The longest match ever to be played in a final was between Tom McRae and Dave Smith in the men’s singles plate draw. In just under 3 hours Dave Smith battled it out 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
The doubles events then followed with the men’s doubles event being played between David Langton and Greg Phillips against Chris Procter and Pete Osmond, with David and Greg sealing the victory in an exciting and close match 6-4, 7-5.
The ladies event saw the two sisters Clare Allman and Jane McGovern take the title in a match that could have gone either way with a score of 6-2,1-6, 10-4. The ladies doubles plate was played earlier in the week and was won by Sarah Seaman and Alison Seaton against Pip Holmes and Bronny Wigram with a convincing score of 6-3, 6-1.
The last matches of the day were the mixed doubles and mixed doubles plate event. David Langton and Melissa Brown, both winners in earlier events, took on Clive Snashall and Annabel Mackay in a 6-3, 6-0 win. Then the husband and wife team of Pete and Wendy Osmond beat Peter Randall and Marina Souter in a very close 3 setter with a score of 3-6,7-5, 10-4.
Trophies were presented by the Club President Ethel Hutchings.
