In 1934 Rugby arrived on Marlborough’s Common. The Club – Marlborough Rugby is planning a celebration to commemorate this significant milestone in the town’s history by creating a memorial wall. This special wall will prominently feature engraved bricks, which will be fixed to the exterior of the Clubhouse, facing outwards onto the Common. Not only will this initiative honour the history of rugby first being played on Marlborough Common in 1934, but it also provides a unique opportunity for the community to take part in this special event.
Tomorrow, Saturday, June 15, a chance will arise for individuals to become involved. Ninety commemorative bricks, one for each year of rugby being played on The Common will be made available for purchase priced at £200 per brick. Marlborough Rugby is there for Marlborough. For players – from the youngest juniors to the oldest participants in ‘Walking Rugby’, and of course the spectators, many of whom regularly come up to pitchside to watch and cheer on the team playing at that time. Funds raised from this celebration of rugby on Marlborough Common will help keep all of this going and possible. Not only will this initiative be a tribute to the history of the sport being played in this iconic location but will also provide much-needed financial support. Marlborough Rugby Club, which boasts two senior sides— the 1st XV poised to start their second season at level 5 and the 2nd XV aiming for promotion. The Club also has a strong mini, junior, and colt sections, plus walking rugby and girls’ rugby. This inclusive approach ensures that rugby is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, ability, or background on Marlborough Common.
Additionally, funds will also be donated to the charity Wooden Spoon, which aims to transform children’s lives through the power of rugby.
