Marlborough LitFest is delighted that bestselling author Robert Harris will be stepping in to fill Sarah Perry’s slot on Saturday 28 September at 1 pm in Marlborough Town hall after she had to cancel her talk. He will be in conversation with journalist and regular LitFest interviewer Alex Clark.
The author of fifteen bestselling novels, Robert Harris will be talking about his latest novel, Precipice, which, weaving fact and fiction, details the affair between Prime Minister HH Asquith and socialite Venetia Stanley in 1914 as the world was on the brink of war.
The 61-year-old Asquith wrote to the 26-year-old Stanley obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state. As Asquith reluctantly leads the country into war with Germany, a young intelligence officer is assigned to investigate a leak of top-secret documents – and suddenly what was a sexual intrigue becomes a matter of national security that will alter the course of political history.
‘A riveting tale of politics, war and erotic obsession’ Sunday Times
‘His most enthralling yet . . . a slam dunk of a plot . . . extraordinary’ Nicholas Coleridge, Independent
‘Gripping . . . Harris also has the John le Carré gift for showing how meetings can become a form of blood sport’ Jake Kerridge, Telegraph
Harris’ work has been translated into forty languages and nine of his books have been adapted for cinema and television. He lives locally in West Berkshire. To book tickets click here.
