Within the next year there will be a General Election. When? No real idea yet, it must take place no later than 28 January next year. But likely much sooner with ‘a Thursday in October’ being top of the betting list, so who knows? Our constituency – formerly Devizes – is now ‘East Wiltshire’ thanks to Boundary Commission changes and Devizes has been shifted elsewhere – to a new Melksham & Devizes constituency. Gradually, the prospective candidates for all parties contesting our seat are emerging.
Sitting MP Danny Kruger will be representing the Conservative Party. LibDems have announced that Marlborough’s David Kinnaird will be standing as their candidate. Labour have just confirmed that Rob Newman will be standing for Labour and Marlborough’s Pete Force-Jones will be standing for the new ‘True & Fair’ party. Regarding the other parties expected to be fielding candidates – Green, Reform, or any ‘fringe’ / quirky names on the ballot papers – no idea as yet. Still to be announced, or decided.
Nearer the election time – once a date has been set (normally four-five weeks in advance of the election day) Marlborough.news will be running an ‘Election Special’ section which will list all of the candidates and let them each present their pitch for your votes. We won’t edit these (unless any submitted are unintelligible, legally suspect or excruciatingly long) so they will be the words of the candidate and this will be the easiest place to visit to scrutinise in which direction your vote should be cast. We won’t ever recommend any candidate, either positively or negatively, we will aim to let you choose.
This is ‘East Wiltshire’, General Election – ‘Round One’……….
