The long-term vision of then Mayor, Edwina Fogg back in 2011 finally became reality last night (Monday 1 July) as the renovated public toilet in the Town Hall basement (forever to be known as ‘Fogg’s Bogs’) were formally declared open by the current Mayor, Cllr Mervyn Hall in a ceremony prior to the evening’s Council Committee meeting.
Mayor Mervyn addressed those present stating that: ”It has long been the aspiration of the Council to open a public toilet facility again at the Town Hall, which started when Edwina Fogg was our Mayor. We are now very pleased to be able to now open this facility providing much needed relief to High Street users.”
He, along with all the other Councillors present inspected the new facility raising the question of ‘how many Councillors could you fit into the new toilet at once?’. The answer was ‘a lot’ – or as many would ever want to try. This demonstrated the adaptability and scale of the new toilet which is large enough to accommodate wheelchair users whilst also offering baby changing space.
Very different from the facility that was there many years ago, albeit now at a cost of 20p.
Marlborough again offers visitors (and residents) two public toilets, the other being the recently renovated block located in the town’s main car park behind Waitrose.
