Not even a rendition of ‘Blue is the colour’ from any Chelsea football supporter would have been enough to persuade the Town Council Planning Committee to choose Blue rather than Black as the main colour for the new town entry signage, due to be installed soon at all entry points on the main roads into the town.
Why? Blue signs have been in existence for many years, although now (and for many recent years) starting to look pretty old and past their prime.
“Black can be seen” stated Deputy Mayor Kym Marie Cleasby, noting that these signs (and the word ‘Marlborough’) need to be seen (and read) by drivers entering the town rather than being on a wall where passers-by can stop and take in the content. The blue design was “lovely” she added, whilst acknowledging the heritage of blue signage at the entry points to Marlborough, but making the point, which was agreed by most Councillors that the purpose of these signs was to be seen, letting drivers know that they had entered Marlborough.
