What Marlborough will do to celebrate the Queen’s ‘Platinum Jubilee’ next year was discussed at Monday (01 November) evening’s meeting of the Full Town Council. We believe that the vote concluded was to form a ‘Working Party’, another ‘Working Party’ where this could be discussed further at a later date.
Why the ‘we believe’? Because, given the acoustics of the upstairs Assembly Room, where the meeting was being held, it wasn’t clear to hear what the proposal going forward actually was. We assume that all councillors could hear the proposal being put forward as they all voted ‘yes’, so the decision was unanimous.
Discussed as alternate options included holding an ‘open session’ where residents of Marlborough could be invited to suggest and discuss ideas for things to do over the end of May extended Bank Holiday weekend – which will take place betweenThursday 2 June and Sunday 5 June. The traditional Monday Bank Holiday is being moved to the Thursday and an extra day – Friday – is being added.
Whether the ‘Working Party’ will decide to hold such an open session where residents can make suggestions – no idea. Hasn’t been decided yet.
Ideas from the agenda included a ‘Community Picnic’ on The Common, and maybe to light the beacon? Beacons across the rest of the country and the commonwealth are being lit so this would be in keeping with celebrations elsewhere. But, as one Councillor suggested, this wasn’t very ‘environmentally friendly’ as it would create CO2 thus not help measures designed to combat Global Warming.
Another idea was to promote a themed ‘Platinum Jubilee Bake’, via various hospitality outlets in the Town.
There isn’t very long between now and the start of June – six and a bit months so the ‘Working Party’ better start ‘Working’ very soon, but it would be an excellent idea to involve the community as a whole, or those that want to become involved in developing a plan for this notable four-day period of national and international celebration elsewhere.
