In the debate on “affordable housing” for Marlborough it is very difficult to buck the market.
A cautionary tale about Rogers Meadow some years ago.
These houses were developed and sold at a discount (almost 50% of market price) to people on the waiting list for council houses.
These houses were often then immediately sold at a 100% profit and the vendors moved to Swindon.
The end result was that a few individuals had benefited and the town was still without “affordable housing”.
It is a very difficult issue to resolve but it is certainly now a new one.
The Housing Associations do not seem to have filled the gap with rented accommodation because they have sold off properties in Marlborough benefiting from the high prices they achieved.
This is an issue that could be immediately addressed.
Yours,
David Chandler
