The Arts Society Pewsey Vale – next lecture

2 September 2025 @ 2:00 pm 4:30 pm

The Arts Society – Pewsey Vale is restarting their lecture series on Tuesday, 2nd September in the Bouverie Hall, Pewsey.   They will welcome Charlie Forman, a London walking tour guide and lecturer, who will talk about “Dismantling the Devil’s Acre – Slums that shamed Victorian London”.  If you are a fan of social history, this is not to be missed.  The Industrial Revolution had resulted in waves of people choosing to leave the impoverished countryside in search of a better life in the cities, but how would they live? This lecture will look at how “the Devil’s Acre” came into being, its conditions and its inhabitants, as well as its demolition and the rebuilding of the area in the 1880’s.   It sounds fascinating and you can find out more about it on the Arts Society website.

Doors open from 2.00pm for refreshments and the lecture starts at 2.30pm for about an hour.   Non-members are very welcome – £7 on the door, card or cash.
