Cash for Coronets: An Architectural legacy
1 October @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm
The October lecture of The Arts Society – Pewsey Vale, will be held on Tuesday 1st October at 2.30pm in the Bouverie Hall, Pewsey.
Between 1870 and 1914, at the height of America’s Gilded Age, no fewer than 454 American heiresses exchanged their crisp American dollars for musty, old, European titles. Apart from the new lease of life those dollars afforded the previously cash-strapped aristocrats, their money was primarily used to restore their crumbling ancestral piles, many of which today, we count amongst our best loved national treasures. We look at some of these dollar “fairy godmothers”, the frequently eye-opening stories of how couples were matched and how the money was spent on the houses which now stand as their often-overlooked architectural legacy.
The speaker is Mark Meredith. He is the founder of HouseHistree.com and lectures regularly in the US and Europe. He has a passion for history and loves telling a story, rather than ‘delivering a lecture’.
Visitors are welcome to attend. £7 on the door (cash only). Refreshments are available from 2.00pm.
We hope to see you there!
