Forty-two volumes of the minutes of Marlborough Town Council have been bound and will now take their place in the archives at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Chippenham.
Rather than keep the minutes in their increasingly dog-eared loose leaf folders, they will now last for many years.
They are a valuable historic record and are available to the public – as well as professional researchers. As town councillors were told: “Much research has been helped by looking through these volumes and the Town Council is able to borrow them” – useful when old controversies about land ownership and so on raise their heads again.
They will take their place on the History Centre’s shelves beside the minutes of Marlborough Borough Council. These minutes have been scanned and will soon be available via the Marlborough Town Council website.
The volumes start with the year 1973-1974. Even a brief glance at the volumes shows how issues recur – whether it is access rights or wonky pavements.
