Storm Henk arrived, dumped it’s load on Marlborough and the surrounding downs and soon after, the Kennet delivered more water to low lying areas of Marlborough than defences could take. Flooding wasn’t expected not regarded as a likely threat so we were all unprepared.
Since then plenty has been done so that those in possibly affected areas are more aware and ready to take precautions, and the Town Council is similarly prepared. It wasn’t quite ‘swimming’ down London Road, through The Parade or at Town Mill (where ironically Marlborough’s swimming pool used to be located) but enough to cause real and long-lasting problems for residents who got flooded.
The Town Council has taken steps to make residents aware, and also to create procedures to alleviate problems as far as is possible, to prepare and also to be able to react quickly. It won’t ever be possible to stop a heavy and violent storm and rainfall, but preparation is vitally important when aing to reduce ensuing damage and disrupiton. Click here to see and download a list of what steps they have taken and how the Council is prepared for any future such event.
Our climate is changing, storms are getting stronger and rainfall heavier – or all of this is happening more regularly than used to be the case – so there will be more potential floods and awareness and preparation is key.
