What does a Town Councillor do? Why are Councillors needed? They are there to serve you, your neighbours and every other resident of Marlborough or Manton. They are there to ensure that your interests are served, not ignored but heard and respected.
That could not have been clearer than on Monday evening last week when the Planning Committee of the Town Council discussed the proposed redevelopment of the former Police Station in George Lane. Residents also turned up and spoke, the Court Room was full, but it was the Councillors there who were voicing what they and the residents they represent wanted and believed was best for Marlborough.
The strength of opinion in that meeting will make the ‘East’ Planning Committee of Wiltshire Council think more than twice before waving it through and saying ‘approved’, and even the Planning Inspectorate wil take into account the opinion of the Town Council were Wiltshire to reject the application and it go to subsequent appeal. So not a ‘done deal’, far from it.
In short, your voice as a Councillor matters. It will be heard, it will be noted, and it will be acted upon. And you, as Councillor will be doing what is best for those in your area, your neighbours and fellow residents.
So – an opportunity is there – two seats available on the town Council. Click here to view and download the ‘co-option pack’, look at it, read it and then, maybe, fill it and send it off. Deadline is 20 June. The Council covers the Marlborough and Manton area, and to qualify Councillors must live within three miles of those boundaries ((and be over eighteen).
