Côr Meibion De Cymru (‘CDMC’ or The South Wales Male Choir) is looking for men to join this well established and famous Welsh Male Voice Choir. Whilst the choir itself is still centred in South Wales, rehearsal groups are being created and the Marlborough area, with it’s very strong and proud ‘Marlborough Welsh’ community, and musical reputation is one obvious area to look. Many successful choirs here already but this one could fit, perfectly.
The choir iwas formed in 1982 by choristers from forty two Welsh choirs with the aim of touring to the Eastern USA. That tour, completed by some 530 choristers, was hugely successful, and many of the men decided to keep the choir going when they returned to UK, hence CMDC was born. To this day, many members still sing with other choirs – something the choir positively encourages.
Why Marlborough? Just off the M4, not far from the Severn Bridge and with a strong Welsh community. And several very popular choirs already.
Guy Edwards, local to this area and a leading member of CDMC explains: “Over the years, the number of choristers has dwindled and we now have about 60 men on the books and we decided it was time for a proper recrutiment campaign. Some of the original choristers came from the English side of the bridge, and it was obvious as I travelled around North Wiltshire that there were a lot of Welshmen – or men with a longing to sing in a Welsh Choir, living in the area, but with no suitable outlet for their singing!
“Hence the idea of setting up an England rehearsal group was born. The Choir already has a number of rehearsal groups in Wales – the groups meet on a weekday evening and then we all get together at Cwmafan about once a month on a Sunday for a whole-choir rehearsal”.
The choir is very active, not just in Wales and the UK but internationally as well. Last year the choir performed in the Royal Albert Hall and in ’22 toured Austria (see lead pic above). On the horizon, in November the choir will be entertaining the fervent and patriotic crowd at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff when Wales will be facing Rughy World Champions, South Africa..
Singing and Wales are synonymous. It is a core part of the welsh culture, particularly the South welsh culture.
