Burbage Primary School pupils have been planting sunflowers and wearing mismatched socks to school today to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day(WDSD). WDSD is observed on 21 March each year in order to raise public awareness of Down Syndrome. The date was chosen to represent the 3 copies of the 21st chromosome present in individuals with Down syndrome. The day has been celebrated since 2012 with the recommendation of United Nations General Assembly.
Zoe Garbutt, Headteacher at Burbage Primary School, said, “On 1st March each child planted a sunflower seed in class and we have watched them grow for 21 days. Each flower, just like each child, will grow and blossom in different ways. Each child will take their sunflower home to continue to watch it grow. The children have also been encouraged to wear odd socks to school today to celebrate everyone’s individuality. We hope that these activities will help to make the voice of people with Down syndrome louder and make a positive impact in their lives.”
