Very recently at the Wiltshire County Cup Finals two Marlborough Youth FC girls teams achieved success. The ‘Rebels’ – Under 16 girls team stormed to glory, becoming Winners of the Under 16 Wiltshire County Cup Final for the fourth year in a row! And the U15 girls ‘Tigers’ achieved runners up success being pipped in the final match by Castle Combe.
For the ‘Rebels’ under 16s, their success arrived on a cold wet misty evening under the floodlights of a 3G pitch in Devizes, where they challenged Downton FC from the Hampshire League in the U16 County Cup Finals. Team Manager Austin Lillywhite said “We really didn’t know what to expect, never having played Downton FC before. The girls, however, always raise their performance for the big occasions and tonight was no exception.”
Marlborough started with some great passing until the 0-0 deadlock was broken halfway through the first half by Elyssia O’Keefe with not one – but two – 30 metre freekick screamers within two minutes of each other, to beat their goalie. A well taken goal by Annie Fry quickly followed, another free kick from Elyssia, and then Sienna Lewis knocked in a fourth goal. Downton made a few changes to the team that briefly let them back into the game, with a well taken goal and a penalty leaving the halftime score at 4-2.
In the second half, Marlborough quickly dominated possession and used the opportunity to score a further two goals from Drea Hypolite and two from Tilly White. The final result crowned Marlborough as convincing winners, with the end of match score being 8-2.
Marlborough Rebels’ delighted Team Manager said, “All the girls played exceptionally well and should be really proud to take home another well-earned title. Tilly White was Player of the Match for her two goals and her efforts to hold up play and offload the ball to devastating effect going forward. A massive thank you to all the supporters who turned up to cheer on the girls, despite the horrible weather, and as always thankyou to our dedicated team sponsors Grow Insurance Partners for their support.”
Marlborough Youth FC ‘Tigers’ achieve title of Runners Up at U15 Girls County Cup Final
On the same day that the Rebels became U16 Girls County Cup Winners, Marlborough ‘Tigers’ Under 15s girls were narrowly defeated in the U15 Girls County Cup by Castle Combe. The ‘Tigers’ had a slow start to the match, which was punished with two early goals from Castle Combe in the first half. In the second half, the Tigers’ play was much stronger, with the majority of the game in the Castle Combe half. The girls managed to pull a goal back, but despite keeping pressure on the opposition, they were unable to score a second goal to level the game.
Congratulations both to Castle Combe running out as 2-1 Winners, and to Marlborough Tigers as Runners Up in the County Cup Final. Team Manager Luke Cox said, “All the girls can be proud with the achievement of reaching the Final.” Many thanks to MYFC Tigers sponsors Emma Lavelle for their ongoing support.
