In Maton’s Footsteps: Discovering the town he painted with Nick Baxter – part of ‘History Live’ at the Merchant’s House

23 April @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Born in Marlborough in 1817, George Maton was recorded in the 1841 census as a painter at just 20 years old. Today, his work is recognised as part of the naive, or folk art, tradition. With a charming simplicity and keen eye for detail, Maton’s paintings capture the everyday life of 19th-century Marlborough, offering a vivid and invaluable glimpse into the town’s people, streets and architecture. For this special and immersive event, The Merchant’s House has brought together the largest collection of Maton’s work ever assembled. After enjoying the exhibition, you are invited to step beyond the canvas and into the town itself for an exclusive guided walking tour led by historian Nick Baxter. As you explore the historic streets, you will quite literally walk in Maton’s footsteps, discovering the very buildings and scenes that inspired his paintings.
The tour concludes back at The Merchant’s House, where you will have the opportunity to explore this remarkable 17th-century home — a fitting and memorable finale to a journey that brings art and history vividly to life.
The Merchant’s House is thrilled to present History Live, a week-long festival celebrating history in all its forms. This inaugural event promises something for everyone: from engaging lectures and a walking tour of Marlborough to visits to Wilton Windmill and Shaw House.
History Live invites visitors to step back in time, explore local heritage, and experience history in a dynamic, interactive way. Organisers hope this marks the start of a landmark annual event for Marlborough.
