Built as a Chapel in 1817 for the non-conformists of Marlborough only to close and re-emerge in the mid-eighties as an antiques centre, which then later closed and after a major and complete rebuild, driven by the vision of a few – the Parade Cinema doors opened in September 2021. Four years ago.
The rebuild was immense and, to those involved, seemingly never ending. Every floorboard that was pulled up, ‘a surprise’ awaited. This restoration phase took over two years to survey, plan and carry out. It was a major task but in September 2021 Marlborough had its own Cinema again, the earlier version occupying the site where many of us regularly visit – Waitrose. That closed in 1971 with ‘Dad’s Army’ as the final screening. So almost exactly fifty years later (closure of the original was in August 1971), The Parade Cinema arrived.
The formal ‘Royal’ opening was made by the then Camilla, HRH Duchess of Cornwall on 2 December 2021, now Queen Camilla.
The new Parade Cinema offers everything a contemporary cinema should – superb sound, crystal clear vision with perfect lines of sight from every seat, all of which are engineered for comfort and relaxation even with drink holders adjacent. Everything focused on the experience, and there to provide such an experience that can only be a level above any other way of enjoying a film. Or a live performance from National Theatre or Royal Opera and Ballet. Something for all.
