As part of West Swindon Parish Council’s project to improve 18 rundown underpasses within Swindon, five St John’s Marlborough students spent two days painting murals on a 26ft subway by The Chester under Mead Way, Swindon.
Whilst being part of their work experience, each mural designed and painted by the students will also be part of their A-Level Art course. Art Teacher, Mike Harrison, said, “The students were really excited to be part this project. It is part of their A-level course and was a fantastic opportunity for them to work in an outdoor environment which has several challenges and is different from working indoors and in school. It is also a good learning opportunity, plus the students get to display their art for a massive audience – for anyone passing to see.”
Following the installation of the murals, the Parish Council wrote to Mr Harrison and said, “Bea, Verity, Laura and Juliana did a fantastic job creating a wonderful subway mural. They were working in challenging conditions due to the weather and their behaviour and attitude was a credit to themselves and the school. We have been swamped with positive comments from the public and we hope the mural will be celebrated for many months. We will add it to our West Swindon Art Trail map as one of the art features within the Parish.”
Sarah Wilson, Vice Principal, said, “I am incredibly proud of our sixth-form artists, whose creativity and talent have brought new life to this once-overlooked space. Their transformation of the underpass is a striking example of how young people can shape and inspire their communities. It’s an honour that their work will feature on the West Swindon Art Trail.”
