The two household recycling centres earmarked by Wiltshire Council for closure – Compton Bassett (Calne) and Purton will now remain open. Wiltshire Council Leader – Ian Thorn has just announced the reversal of the plans following the outpouring of opposition from residents, councillors and community groups around the areas. And here, in Marlborough the effect on the Centre here could have been significant as many previously going to Calne would come here.
Will this mean that the ‘booking’ for visits proposal is being shelved? We don’t know but the level of traffic to the Marlborough centre is such that it isn’t generally that busy to make a booking system necessary. But we will wait and see.
Why the ‘U’ turn? Apparently operators Hills have come back with ‘better terms’. Whether it was this, the widespread opposition to the closures (with no alternatives even ‘pencilled in’), or a combination of both – who knows. The important issue is that the centres will remain open, for the foreseeable future which will allay any concerns about the traffic to the Marlborough centra.
