This year churches in Marlborough are marking Easter with two special outdoor events in addition to the full range of Church Services.
The Easter theme for the Day is ‘Water, Fire and Wind’.
A Dawn Service outside the College Chapel at 6.00am will start the celebrations. A sprinkling of water from the River Kennet will remind us of our Baptism. Then a bonfire will be lit.
From this fire the large Easter candle will be carried with great ceremony into the College Chapel as the risen Christ is greeted in the way that Christians have done for hundreds of years.
The display of Fireworks in front of the Memorial Hall will then capture the exuberance of Easter and the transformation of darkness into light.
The day ends with the now customary kite flying on the College playing fields at 4.00pm.
This is borrowed from the Caribbean custom – with the dancing scraps of colour blown about the sky by the wind making a happy representation of the joy and freedom of Resurrection.
Everyone is welcome to attend the church services as well as these outdoor events. But remember the clocks go forward one hour very early on Sunday, March 27 – so it will mean a very early start.
