The Arts Society Pewsey Vale – John Singer Sargent

4 November @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm
The Arts Society – Pewsey Vale will be holding their next lecture on Tuesday 4th November in the Bouverie Hall, Pewsey at 2.30pm.
The subject of the lecture is John Singer Sargent, the American expatriate artist, born in Florence in 1856 and who died in London in 1925. He was considered to be the leading portrait painter of his generation and captured much of Edwardian high society. His output was prolific, his technique outstanding. His early submission to the Paris Salon, the Portrait of Madame X, was met with scandal rather than accolades and led him to leave Paris and move to London.
His portraits were consistent with the accepted style and formality of portraiture, while his informal works and landscapes displayed a more impressionist theme.
A later discovery of his previously unseen male nudes, resulted in a reevaluation of his life and work. His same-sex interests, unconventional friendships with women and engagement with race and gender issues, mark him out as socially and aesthetically progressive.
Gavin Plumley will be our speaker. He is a writer and broadcaster and lectures widely about the culture of Central Europe. Recent appearances include talks for the Hay and Cheltenham Literature Festivals, the Royal Opera House, the National Gallery, the National Trust, the National Theatre, the British Museum and the V&A.
Please Note: AGM at 2.15pm for 15 mins. Refreshments will be served AFTER the lecture. Visitors are very welcome for £7 on the door.
