Residents and team members at Brendoncare Froxfield care home enjoyed an early festive treat when they welcomed a very special visitor – Gin, a 12-year-old donkey on Monday (17 November).
Gin toured the care home meeting residents and team members alongside her owners, John and Linda McLaren, who run the Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary near Didcot.
The visit was inspired by resident Jan Bryant, who has adopted Bentley, another donkey at the sanctuary.
Jan and her husband Chris were regular visitors to the sanctuary and wanted to share the joy of these gentle animals with fellow residents.
Already something of a star, Gin has previously appeared in the cast of Carmen at the Royal Opera House.
Lorraine Annetts, Wellbeing Coordinator at Brendoncare Froxfield, said:
“It is such a joy for everyone to meet Gin. Donkeys bring a sense of calm and happiness. They also stir emotions as many people will remember taking donkey rides on the beach when they were young.
“Her visit created a wonderful atmosphere for residents and team members. It was truly a memorable way to start our Christmas season.”
Brendoncare Froxfield is run by Brendoncare, a charity founded more than 40 years ago. It runs seven care homes, five extra care housing developments, community clubs, and services, including digital and telephone support, for older people across the south of England.
