Marlborough Ladies XI 2 : Chippenham 1
After last season’s run of good wins and rugby-style scores, Marlborough Ladies First team were promoted to the West Clubs Women’s Hockey – Premier Division 2A.
This was the Marlborough Ladies first team’s opening league game in their new league and they knew it was going to be a tough challenge against a well drilled Chippenham side who had finished mid table in the league last season.
The odds looked particularly long as the Marlborough team had lost nine players from last year’s winning side.
The first half was fast and furious with hardly a moment to draw breath. Both sides were dangerous on the break and both defended well. Marlborough were unlucky not to score, but some great saves from the Chippenham keeper meant the sides went into half time without a goal being scored.
Marlborough started the second half the better of the two sides, pressing the Chippenham defence and within minutes the deadlock was broken when Alex Crosby-Jones flicked the ball over the diving goalkeeper to make it one-nil.
Marlborough kept up their assault on the Chippenham goal and after a superb solo run and shot by Lottie Colquhoun were rewarded to take the score to two nil.
Chippenham then stepped up a gear with relentless attacks and Marlborough dug deep with some incredible defending, but eventually Chippenham managed to get the ball in the back of the Marlborough net.
At two goals to one both sides kept up the pressure to the very end but that was the final result.
An incredible performance from the whole side and three points on the table. It was a great way to start the season: played one, won one.
The T H White player of the match was Lottie Colquhoun.
