West Of England Premier League (Wilts Division)
Marlborough Vs Devizes 16th May 2015
Devizes 86 all out: Marlborough 87 – 9
Marlborough won by 1 Wicket
Match Sponsors: The Bell at West Overton
Marlborough won a low scoring encounter with their local rivals Devizes on Saturday by the narrowest of margins of 1 wicket.
Devizes having won the toss elected to bat but found the Marlborough strike bowling attack of Brad Frost and George Fox difficult to score from. Jacob Stoner was dismissed by Fox in the 7th over having scored 11 with the Devizes total on 15 following some very tight bowling from the Marlborough pair.
Devizes had only added a further 2 to the total when Joe Wookey was caught also off the bowling of Fox for 1. Wookey’s innings had lasted for 28 balls which clearly showed the accuracy of the Marlborough bowling attack.
Fox in full flow bowled straight through his allotted overs but not before dismissing Tom Grant and Tim Saye to leave Devizes on 46 for 4 after 20 overs. Fox finished the day with 4 for 8 off his 10 overs with 5 of them being maidens.
Any hope’s that the Devizes batsmen held that things would improve with the removal of Fox from the attack was short lived as Will Langton soon picked up the attack for Marlborough when he dismissed Tom Andrew and Johnathan Skull in the 22nd over.
Langton then had Steve Chapman trapped LBW in the next over with the Devizes score on 53.
Devizes’ Tom Pike continued to show resilience despite watching five wickets tumbling at the other end during his 45 ball innings and was the last man out for 22 when he was stumped by George Penfold off the bowling of Ben Head with the last ball of the 32nd with the score on 86.
Marlborough in reply got off to a steady start with Tom Palmer taking control and they seemed to be coasting to a comfortable win at 57 for the loss of 2 when the Marlborough collapse begun.
New Marlborough Captain Arran Dickinson was the first depart for 6 and then Marlborough lost their next 6 wickets for just 29 runs. Palmer completed his 50 but was dismissed 5 runs short of victory but with 3 wickets in hand.
With the pressure building Marlborough then lost Fox and Head in quick succession and with the scores tied Langton and Dave West scampered for a close run single to secure the 1 wicket victory. Saye was the pick of the Devizes bowlers collecting 4 wickets within 29 balls for just 9 runs.
Marlborough Captain Arran Dickinson said after the game: “I’m very relieved to have got off to a winning start today in a game we could easily have thrown away. Our bowlers were on top form again but with the exception of Tom (Palmer) we have batted very poorly chasing a low score and this is something we need to learn from for the future.”
Marlborough enjoyed a successful weekend all round as all of their senior teams secured victories.
The 2nds won at Chippenham by 26 runs with Paul Smith scoring 87 not out with the bat and Will Thomas leading the way with the ball with 3 for 27.
The 3rds made it a full house with a 100 run win at home to Marshfield. Rob Attkinson top scored for Marlborough with 124 and Andy Rawlings and Harry Gleen doing the destruction with ball both taking 3 wickets a piece.
