Marlborough’s late season revival continued with a hard fought victory at home to Wootton Bassett in the match kindly sponsored by DIY Rainbows of Marlborough.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat Bassett were indebted to Sam Lawro – 72 not out – who batted the entire innings while wickets fell around him.
His efforts helped Bassett reach 173 all out for their 50 overs, with Steve Twine 22 and Jaspal Chahal 21 also making useful contributions, while for Marlborough, the main damage was inflicted by George Fox (5-36) and Harrison Painter (2-24).
In reply Marlborough found themselves in early trouble at 31-3, but determined knocks of 33 from Mags Painter, 26 from Fox and 29 not out from Will Langton saw Marlborough reach the victory target with 3 overs to spare. The pick of Wootton Bassett’s bowlers were Harvey Cummins (3-53) and Dan Ellis (3-19).
Marlborough skipper Nick Crabbe was a happy man after the game: “We bowled and fielded well again and Foxy finally got the luck he deserved, we did well to chase the runs down after being 30-3 and Will Langton played really well under pressure”
