Marlborough’s league campaign finally got underway with a comfortable victory at home against Spye Park in the game sponsored by the Wellington arms public house of Marlborough.
Put into bat by the visitors Marlborough openers Nick Crabbe with 23 and Ben Head 19 gave the home side a solid start.
With batsmen Pete Day marking his return to the club with 40 and useful lower order contributions from Harrison Painter 34 not out and Peter Grant 17, Marlborough reached 202 for 8 off their 50 overs with Mark Hulse 3-32 and Dean Wallington 2-37 the pick of the bowlers for Spye.
In reply Spye’s batsmen struggled to deal with the bowling of Head as the Marlborough all rounder took 5-21. Russell West 48 offered some strong resistance for Spye but young bowling pair Cam Gordon 2-26 and Paul Smith 2-22 ensured that Marlborough secured victory dismissing Spye for 129 all out.
Skipper Nick Crabbe was delighted with the win describing it as a ” good all round performance especially considering we had four players under 17 in the side who all emerged with great credit from the game”.
