More than forty young people, aged between 13 and 18, attended the youth centre on Friday night, to chill out and socialise, although many of the older ones – having checked in – chose to take advantage of the balmy May evening by using the skate park.
Indoor activities were laid on over two floors, with the pool table proving a particular draw. Soft drinks and pizza were sponsored by Marlborough College.
“It was quiet for the first half hour, then suddenly we were really busy,” said town councillor Lisa Farrell, who is leading the campaign to keep the youth centre open.
“We have certainly proved a demand for it. No-one can tell us it isn’t needed.”
The youth centre will be open every Friday evening for at least three months, which is when the current tranche of funding runs out.
After that, it will be up to the army of volunteers to raise money and provide cover to keep the facility open.
Wiltshire Council closed the Youth Centre last summer, after 44 years, as youth services were slashed across the county.
