Police have issued a tacit warning to steer clear of violent drunk Duncan Tanguay, after he was arrested for causing trouble on a Swindon bus just 18 hours after being handed down an ASBO for a string of public order offences.
The decision by Marlborough Police to publicise Tanguay’s post-conviction ASBO on Facebook was met with a mixed response on Friday, February 7, with several of the site’s users saying police officers should not use the social networking site to ‘name and shame’ individuals.
But sympathy for Tanguay seemed to wane on Monday – his 39th birthday – after he was convicted at Swindon Magistrates Court under the Public Order Act for an incident on a Swindon bus, which occurred the following morning.
Sergeant Barry Reed, of Marlborough Police, said: “Mr Tanguay is well known to the local officers who have, over a four year period worked alongside of Aster Housing, Wiltshire County Council and alcohol support services to tackle the cause of his offending behaviour.
“Over the past several months we have seen an increase in Mr Tanguay’s disorderly behaviour, most recently in Marlborough when he approached a 67-year-old male who was looking into an estate agent’s window at 10.30 on a Sunday morning.
“He gave the gentleman verbal abuse and tried to headbutt him. While I am conscious that Mr Tanguay is alcohol dependant, this behaviour will not be tolerated.”
On Friday, Tanguay – of Five Stiles Road, Marlborough – was given a two-year ASBO, preventing him from entering Castle and Ball Hotel, The Bear Hotel, The Lamb, The Green Dragon, The Wellington, The Marlborough, The Crown Hotel, The Queens Head, and The Roebuck, along with One Stop Shop in High Street and Waitrose.
He was convicted of seven public order offences dating back to September last year, including: committing racially aggravated public order toward school children in Swindon; verbally abusing staff in Minstral; verbally abusing staff in One Stop Shop (two counts); being Drunk and Disorderly in High Street; verbally abusing staff in Tesco; and using threatening violence in London Road.
He was also given an alcohol treatment plan to address his alcohol dependency. Police said any further incidents involving Tanguay should be reported on the non-emergency number 101.
