Shortly before 4.10pm, a Mini Countryman being driven West towards Marlborough collided with a Mercedes C220 being driven towards Hungerford on a sharp bend near the OKA furniture shop – a location locals say is too often the scene of accidents.
The 46-year-old male driver of the Mini sustained serious leg injuries and a broken arm and was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.
The male driver of the Mercedes sustained serious injuries to his legs, chest and collar bone and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.
Firefighters from Marlborough, Pewsey and Newbury attended the scene, as both drivers had to be cut from their vehicles.
Police closed the road for six hours while medics and accident investigators attended the scene, and diverted traffic at the London Road roundabouts in Marlborough, leading to inevitable tailbacks through the town at the height of the Friday rush-hour. It was a similar story in Hungerford, where the A4 was closed from The Bear Hotel.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident – contact PC Will Ayres of the Roads Policing Unit on 101.
