OK, sometimes ‘The Times’ demonstrates a remarkable degree of taste and excellent judgement. When stories like this appear, definitely….. The article – ‘The best UK high streets — as chosen by you‘ appeared in the online version earlier this afternoon (Monday 8 July).
Marlborough High Street was ranked No 1. The Times noted that: “Readers felt that Marlborough — with its thriving twice-weekly markets, spacious high street and 15th-century church — had been overlooked. “Marlborough must be near the top high-street ranking,” Vergil Berger said. Alan Jackson concluded: “Second-widest high street in the UK, lovely range of shops, picturesque town hall at one end and beautiful church at the other end, all with views to neighbouring hills. Picture-perfect town.” What’s not to love?”.
Most of us would agree with that, although as we live with it every day we may run the risk of being ‘blind’ to it’s charm as it’s what we see and walk along as a part of regular life. But for visitors, it’s different. And more striking, and welcoming.
Other noted High Streets included those in Sherborne (Dorset), Northallerton (North Yorkshire), Lincoln, Wells, Ludlow and Rye. So Marlborough is in pretty good company.
We won’t attempt to copy and use the pic of the High Street that was displayed in the Times piece for reasons of copyright, so we’ve used one of our own, taken from the tower of St Peter’s.
