A planning application has been submitted to Wiltshire Council for the long-promised hotel in the Redrow Homes development site on the Salisbury Road – now known as Marleberg Grange. It will be a Premier Inn – the chain of low cost hotels owned by Whitbread plc.
The hotel will have 69 rooms and a Thyme Restaurant – the themed restaurants found in the larger Premier Inns. The building is on a sloping site and will mainly be on three storeys – with a fourth ‘part floor’ at its south-east end where the building is closest to the roundabout. This section of the hotel will house the restaurant and the reception area.
The proposed design for the building has allowed the inclusion of 68 parking spaces. This will be welcomed as it makes it most unlikely that parking for staff and guests will spill over into residential streets. There will be five disabled parking spaces adjacent to the main entrance.
Among the application documents there is a detailed plan of planting around the hotel – complete with nesting boxes for birds and a ‘tower’ to encourage insects.
Much of the application relates to reserved matters and to conditions laid down in the main planning permission for the whole development. The consultation for the planning application ends on May 3. And the target date for a decision is June 28. Marlborough Town Council had pressed the Crown Estate to include a new hotel in the plans – following the purchase of the Ivy House Hotel by Marlborough College.
