The Marlborough Players’ planned live production has been postponed until next year because of the pandemic. However, they have recorded an audio play as a virtual alternative that is available on their website here
‘A Suitable Girl’ is a 15 minute comedy set in the near future where our protagonist, Clive Martin, is conditioned by lockdown to working from home. He only leaves his house when necessary or to see his mother. She is concerned for his health and conspires with Alicia, his virtual assistant, to change his life style. He is imprisoned in his house and compelled to follow a healthy lifestyle but tries to rebel.
It is directed by Tony Michael who said, “This is a first for the Players and we were learning as we went along. We just managed to record the actors on the day before lockdown 2. It’s completely home grown except for some of the sound effects which are courtesy of the BBC.”
Ben Tarring plays Clive Martin and Samantha Harvey is Alicia. Tim Beckwith plays George the driver and Barry Mercer is the voice of Customer Services. The script was written by Alan Pryor with additional material by Tony Michael; the music was also composed by Alan. The recording was engineered by Alan and Tim.
