Marlborough was put on alert today (Monday) that the Olympic torch heading for the 2012 Olympic Games in London will be passing through the town.
The announcement was made on the steps of the town hall by the Mayor, Councillor Alexander Kirk Wilson, pictured with Chris Humphries (Chairman of Marlborough Area Board), Liam Costello (Town Clerk) and Beadle, David Sherratt.
By tradition the Olympic flame is said to have been kept burning since the first games in ancient Greece. Today’s version of it is finally due to arrive in the UK on May 19.
And about 11.30 on the morning of May 23 it will be run through the town by one of thousands of volunteers originally chosen for the honoured task, whose names will not be revealed until the new year.
“It will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase the community of Marlborough with everybody coming out to celebrate” said Marlborough town clerk Liam Costello.
The flame will pass through Wiltshire on four separate days, on 22nd and 23rd May in the northern area of the county, visiting Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge on 22nd before venturing on through Chippenham, Calne and Marlborough on the morning of the 23rd on the way to Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon in the afternoon.
In July it will return to the south of the county visiting Salisbury and Amesbury, whilst stopping off for an iconic photo opportunity at Stonehenge.
