St John’s students have been learning some useful new skills whilst helping ARK (Charity Action for the River Kennet) look after the River Kennet.
The students had a sunny morning in a woods in Minal using tools to make faggots (large bundles of coppiced Hazel) that they will get to use in the River Kennet next month to help restore the islands at Stonebridge Wild River Reserve, which is jointly owned by ARK and Marlborough Town Council.
This year ARK are running a series of practical conservation and river restoration events at the reserve specifically for local teens thanks to funding from the Local Youth Network (LYN).
“Young people have always been active with ARK, but it is great to have funding to enable a project that comprises of many different elements just for them. Hopefully we will attract some new faces who have perhaps not done anything like this before and fancy giving it a go. The students from St John’s did a fantastic job this morning and it will be great to get them in the river in July using the faggots they have made to restore the river and enjoy themselves too.”, said ARK’s Project Officer Anna Forbes.
