St John’s Academy in Marlborough has installed energy-generating solar panels on the roof of its Atrium building, saving around £2,000 in energy costs each year.
The 125 Polycrystalline Silicone Photovoltaic solar panels are hidden behind a parapet on the flat roof above the Sixth Form Common Room.
The system will provide 31.25 kw of electricity-generating capacity, almost eight times the amount generated by a standard domestic PV array.
The installation is expected to provide up to 30 000 kilowatt hours of electricity over a typical year.
The installation project has been carried out as part of the British Gas Energy for Tomorrow programme, which is an independently run, non-profit organisation dedicated to developing renewable energy sources and technologies for the future.
St John’s is one of 150 schools around the country that have benefitted from having the PV system installed free of charge and making use of the free energy that is generated.
