Shakespeare festival volunteer receives award from PM

A volunteer who brought the works of Shakespeare to Wiltshire schools has received an award from David Cameron.

Jo Del Mar, from Pewsey, raised thousands of pounds to enable children from rural schools to take part in a festival marking the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare.

As a result of her efforts, hundreds of young people got the chance to perform in professional theatres.

On Wednesday, Jo travelled to London to meet David Cameron at Downing Street, before enjoying a special Shakespeare Schools Festival performance at the official residence of the prime minister in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The PM presented Jo with a Points of Light award, which recognises outstanding volunteers who are making a change in their community.

Jo said: “I am very thrilled to be named a Point of Light for my work with the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

“I would not be able to achieve any of what I do without the help of The Ernest Cook Trust and the Ingram Hill Foundation, who help fund the schools’ participation and take an interest in the festival.”

David Cameron said: “Jo has been instrumental in bringing the fantastic work of the Shakespeare Schools Festival to children in small rural schools, who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to unlock the magic of Shakespeare and perform his words in a professional venue.

“I’m delighted to be recognising her service with this Point of Light award.”
