On Thursday last week, January 16, Nigel Kerton, Prospect Hospice’s new ambassador received a cheque for £544 from Janice Kingstone (right), Waitrose Marlborough’s Community Champion and Tim Pike (left), Department Manager Retail.
This was for last month’s ‘Community Matters’ award, and of the £1,000 donated by Waitrose in December over half the green tokens placed went into the Prospect Hospice section so they received over half of the overall award.
“It’s thanks to the generous donations of organisations like Waitrose that enables Prospect Hospice to run successfully” said Nigel. “Only one quarter of the income comes from the NHS and other statutory bodies, so this year we will need to raise more than £4.3m. Last year we cared for almost two thousand patients and admissions are going up by about 10% each year so donations are vital” he added.
Every month Waitrose shoppers have the chance to choose from three local charities and good causes and place a green token given to them at the till in the box of their choice. At the end of the month the number of counters in each is counted, and the monthly award of £1,000 is split according to the respective proportions in each box.
“Without the giving money, Prospect Hospice couldn’t run, so initiatives like the Waitrose Community Awards are so important” said Nigel, adding “Thanks to Tim, Janice, the Marlborough Waitrose partners and of course, the shoppers of Marlborough who chose Prospect Hospice for their green tokens”.
