‘Positive thinking for Piglets’ is the latest book by local illustrator Chantal Bourgonje and her husband, the author and TV script-writer, David Hoskins.
The picture book, aimed at children aged 4 to 7 years old is the second in the Horace and Nim series and is published by Hubble and Hattie Kids. The story is based on a collection of different woodland animals. The first in the series, ‘The Lucky Lucky Leaf’ was published in 2018. ’Positive thinking for Piglets’ can however, be read as a stand-alone book.
The book asks the question - is anything really possible if you want it badly enough? Described as a modern day parable for young readers, it contains several messages such as how you don’t always end up getting what you deserve. However, smiling through disappointment and having friends around helps, even if, sometimes they are a bit grumpy.
David told marlborough.news, “I try to write stories that children will enjoy but which will also get them to ask questions. The stories don’t shy away from life’s ironies and complications. ’Positive thinking for Piglets’ is humorous and tongue in cheek and will I hope be entertaining for adults.”
Horace and Nim started life as cartoons aimed at adults, their gentle humour intended to rekindle childhood memories. Chantal published them on a blog and had a worldwide following.
Next, Redan’s ‘Friends Magazine for Children’ (circulation 70,00) liked the characters and published some Horace and Nim stories. From this success ‘The Lucky Lucky Leaf’ was born.
It’s been a busy year for Chantal. Earlier in the year Hubble and Hattie Kids also published her first self-authored book ‘The Fierce Little Mouse’. This book also has animals as the main characters.
“I love animals and animal stories allow you to draw a wide variety of characters and express a lot of different emotions without upsetting anybody.”
Many of the inspirations for her drawings come from walking in the Savernake Forest with her dogs.
She also illustrated ‘Marlborough at War with the King’ written by Sara Holden and Nick Baxter which was published ahead of the English Civil War Society’s re-enactment weekend.
‘Positive thinking for Piglets’ is published by Hubble and Hattie Kids. It is available in bookshops, including The White Horse, and on-line at £6.99.
